The crisp e-Paper LCD screen is a huge part of the 7 day battery life this smartwatch can attain. As long as you don’t mind a black and white display, the Pebble 2 can offer you superior battery life with the always-on LCD screen that an AMOLED screen simply cannot.

The Good

There are many aspects of the Pebble 2 that are impressive.

First, is the affordability of this unit — At only $129.99 per watch, the Pebble brand has maintained its image as one of the most affordable options for smartwatch users on the market.

The improvement of the revamped health app is another plus. The addition of a great, built-in heart monitor is a huge selling point for the Pebble 2. It also features an accelerometer and other fitness options that keep track of sleep patterns (hours slept), step count, and heart rate. You can even check out your health stats via the top button on the watch face see current and previous statistics.

Included is a “Workout” app that is pre-installed in the Pebble 2. Other stock programs are weather display, music controls, stopwatch, timer, alarm clock, and the choice of over 15,000 third-party watch faces and applications at the Pebble app store.

Water resistance is something all smartwatch consumers are looking for. As a piece of technology one’s wears on the wrist, having excellent water resistance is key — nobody wants rain, water splashing while washing your hands, or a fall in the pool to ruin their new gear. The water resistance of the Pebble 2 is 30 meters, which means you can not only workout without worry, but you can even go swimming with this updated Pebble.

The setup is as easy as all of Pebble’s previous watches. You can download the companion Pebble app on your smartphone, pair it with your phone like you would with any Bluetooth device, and that’s all you need to do! From there, you can do anything from adding watch faces, configuring notifications, and more.

The interface of the Pebble 2 is a bit different from the company’s recent watches such as Timeline. The latest software update emphasising on health and fitness, the interface feels different. The watch face, top button that leads to a quick view of your health stats, a center button for navigation, and a bottom key that shows upcoming and current events, the entire setup is quite easy to use and view.

“Quick View” is the Pebble interface of choice in this model and shows notifications at upcoming events through pop-up peeks.

The Bad

One of the cons of the Pebble 2 is one of the more important aspects of a smartwatch: the design.

Admittedly, the design of the Pebble 2 is rather outdated. Some of the colors make it look more attractive than others (the black, for example, hides some design flaws), but the boxy look and squareness of the design is not so pleasing to the eye.

Considering that the Pebble 2 + Heart Monitor is attempting to add more health features for runners and those keeping track of their health, this model does not have a GPS, which can be counterproductive to the goal. Runners, joggers, and other fitness buffs may want a GPS to keep track of their fitness.

Even if you purchase the Pebble 2 for use as a typical smartwatch, a lack of a GPS is concerning. One of the reasons of having a smartwatch is to make it easier to retrieve information and to find one’s way around without the aid of a smartphone. Without GPS, this function is out.

The addition of a heart rate monitor is Pebble 2’s main selling point for this model. The built-in heart rate monitor is a much better choice than other smartwatches, which either do not have one at all or offer manual, bulky cords to put on at an additional price. The built-in monitor gives this smartwatch a boost for fitness consumers, who will be researching and buying based on these features.

In addition to the monitor, the improved health app has been revamped and can track your steps, keep track of heartbeats per minute, and keep track of your sleeping habits for a great price.

The battery life is another hit of this smartwatch. With a 7 day lifespan with each charge, you can go cable free during extended adventures.

The functionality of the Pebble 2 is pretty great despite some of the so-so design features. The black and white e-paper display features a durable Corning Gorilla Glass, measuring 1.26 inches across. The slim look includes a plastic housing and silicone straps that are more akin to the first-ever wearable, but this retro design may be very pleasing to some. The housing chassis measures 39.5 x 30.2 x 9.8mm and offers a streamlined, if boxy, look.

The long lasting battery is very competitive and is a great selling point for Pebble. Consumers looking for this type of basic smartwatch will be happy at the battery life. The black and white e-paper display saves a lot of battery power that smartwatches using AMOLED screens waste.

The 30 meter water resistance is great for fitness and health fans, who plan on using this outdoors, on the go, and during their workouts. The silicone strap, plastic housing, and water resistance make for a great setup for swimming as well.

The Pebble website is selling the Pebble 2 + Heart Rate for only a bit more than the original Pebble’s competitive price of $99, at $129.99. For a next-generation Pebble with a heart rate monitor and updated specs, this is a very reasonable price and is in-line with the brand’s goal of affordability and functionality in the smartwatch world.

Overall Impression

Overall, the Pebble 2 is a basic smartwatch that offers improved fitness features over the original Pebble. The design will not win any awards with the black and white screen and plastic housing, but the built-in heart rate monitor and water resistant body gives it serious health and fitness cred.

Along with the revamped health app, the Pebble 2 can offer you the fitness tracking you desire and the basics of a smartwatch at a great price.
