ASUS is well-known for their high-end laptops and cutting edge technology. It is of no surprise that ASUS refuses to be left behind in the area of wearable technology. Not only have they created their own smart watches, but with the ZenWatch 2, they have created a low-cost alternative to mainstream smart watches.

The ZenWatch 2 is an Android Wear smart watch that costs significantly less than Apple, Samsung, Vector Luna, Huawei, and other smart watches on currently on the market. Available in 1.45-inch and 1.63-inch screens, there are six pre-assembled colors and options available on Amazon.

These unique and attractive colors and materials are a beautiful way that ASUS sets itself apart from other smart watches. The AMOLED touch screen display is presented as a slightly rounded and elongated rectangle, which offers a different look than traditional round faces. This AMOLED touch screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, making it one of the most durable and shatter-resistant watch on the market today.

With IP67 water resistance protection, while not water-proof, this watch is protected against water immersion up to 1 meter. The built-in Wi-Fi extends range and connectivity with your smartphone.

The battery life is very good on the ZenWatch 2. Even when it is bright, this watch can last for nearly two days between charges. It is also very quick to charge—as little as 30 minutes for a half of a charge, and a little over an hour for a full charge.

The Good

The AMOLED screen is very detailed, crisp, and has excellent saturation of color. The strap locks on securely and can be easily changed out with a 22mm band. The screen itself is attractive as it has a slightly curved design to it.

As an Android Wear watch, there are many watch faces to choose from through Google Wear and through the ASUS application. The price, of course, is a huge reason why this smart watch is so fantastic.

ASUS ZenWatch 2 is available in the following design colors and materials:

  • Rose Gold Case, Orange Leather Band
  • Silver Case, Beige Leather Band
  • Silver Case, Silver Metal (mesh) Band
  • Gunmetal Case, Gray Metal Band
  • Rose Gold Case, Taupe Leather Band
  • Silver Case, Brown Rubber Band

The Bad

The bezel is a bit large, which makes the watch face bigger and the screen size look smaller. Many users would prefer a smaller bezel. The watch does not have GPS, a heart rate monitor, a camera, sim card, and a few other things; however, this is reflected in the lower price. Some users also do not favor the charging cord, which is around 2 feet long.

Highlights of this ASUS smart watch include the variety of colors available, an incredibly crisp AMOLED touch screen, and basic call, text, email, rugged display, and tech specs that are more akin to smartphones than a simple smart watch.

Featuring Qualcomm Snapdragon 400, built-in Wi-Fi (802.11 BGN), and Android Wear technology, this smart watch is a less costly alternative to other expensive mainstream smart watches.

In addition to an attractive, curved AMOLED display, it is lightly water resistant up to 1 meter in case of an emergency fall. The Gorilla 3 display glass avoids shattering unlike many other smart watches that are more expensive than the ZenWatch 2.

Another highlight is the battery life: even at nearly full brightness, the ZenWatch 2 can last up to 2 days on a full charge and can be charged to its halfway point in 30 minutes, and fully in about an hour or so.

The ZenWatch 2 has proved itself to be a very impressive and popular smart watch in terms of functionality.

While it is not the most high-tech smart watch on the market like the Samsung Gear S2, Apple Watch, Moto 360, Vector Luna, or the Huawei Watch, the ASUS ZenWatch 2 is definitely worth the lower pricetag. The functionality of the existing tech specs (e.g., calls, call logs, texts, emails, etc.) have been found to work incredibly well for a casual smart watch.

The Android Wear and operating system (Qualcomm Snapdragon 400) are of the highest quality and are up to date with modern applications and smartphone compatibility.

Depending on the size, color, and band material, the ASUS ZenWatch 2 can cost anywhere from $129.99 to $199.99 on Amazon.

Overall Impression

With a variety of unique colors, materials, and interchangeable bands and straps, the ASUS ZenWatch 2 is any Android-lover’s dream watch.

If you are on a budget and do not wish to spend hundreds of dollars, or if you are not a frequent smart watch user, this is an excellent Android watch for daily use.
